About our award winners

Andrea Lauzon

Andrea is a single mom taking a Law Clerk program at Centennial College. She has shown  perseverance and dedication in working to reach her goals while facing many the many challenges of being a single mom.  She works hard to maintain a 4.0 GPA and also goes out of her way to help tutor other Students.

Jenna-Lee MacLea

Jenna-Lee had many struggles in her young life,  Since birth she was diagnosed with mild cerebal-palsy and she deals with pain in her left leg daily.  For the past two years she has been struggling as a single mom of 3 children .  Her eldest, a daughter, was born with several congenital abnormalities, and at only 7 years old she has already undergone 13 surgeries.  Jenna-Lee is currently taking courses at Durham College and hopes to be able to continue her education to become a Registered Nurse and earn her bachelors of Science in Nursing.

Barb Allan,  winner of the  Donna McCann Award

Barb Allan’s daughter, Meredith, was born with Downs Syndrome 25 years ago, she was very ill and Barb needed to leave her job to care for her. In Aurora, Barb realized that once young adults with intellectual disabilities were finished school at 21, there were no places for them to go to contribute to the workplace and their community. She knew how much Meredith could contribute if given the opportunity and so the ABLE Network was born (www.theablenetwork.ca).

In addition to founding and sitting on the Board of Directors of ABLE, Barb is also an active member of the Interfaith Refugee Resettlers (IRR) which is made up of people from Trinity Anglican Church, Aurora United Church and the Newmarket Islamic Centre. In her role on this committee, Barb has worked to find a place for their new refugee family to live, furnish it and provide clothing, ESL classes and schooling for the family’s four young children.

With all her responsibilities, Barb also takes the time to volunteer with the Welcome Table. This is a community meal feeding those in need every Wednesday evening. She was the volunteer co-ordinator of this program for 8 years before she started ABLE.

Congratulations to Barb Allen, your work in York Region deserves recognition and we are honoured to be able to help support your cause, THE ABLE NETWORK  and proud to have you as the Winner of our Donna McCann Award.

A Special Thanks to our Speakers and Event Sponsors

Karen King, our MC, was an eloquent & passionate speaker who spoke about the value of Education for Women and how having a mom who was a single parent impacted her.
Our speakers, Dr. David Saul, offered tips on aging, and Sue Bowe-McKee did an outstanding job of enlightening us on how small steps in our lives can lead to big changes.
We also had the pleasure of entertainment by Denise Fex, who provided us with beautiful music & vocals as the guests arrived and throughout the evening.   Thanks again to all of you.
