Our LUNAFEST fundraiser took place on September 22nd, 2018

Lunafest’s fundraising film festival was dedicated to promoting awareness about women’s issues, highlighting women filmmakers and bringing people together in their communities. This year’s unique film festival highlighted women as leaders in society, and was illustrated through nine short films by women filmmakers. The films ranged from animation to fictional drama. They covered topics such as women’s health, body image, relationships, cultural diversity and breaking barriers.

Much appreciation to Janet Wheeler for donating two Gift Baskets,  as well as Fabian Giusti and Village Grocer for the other two baskets for our Raffle.

And finally thanks to everyone who bought tickets to support our Dream Programs.

Barb Allan,  winner of the  Donna McCann Award

Barb Allan’s daughter, Meredith, was born with Downs Syndrome 25 years ago, she was very ill and Barb needed to leave her job to care for her. In Aurora, Barb realized that once young adults with intellectual disabilities were finished school at 21, there were no places for them to go to contribute to the workplace and their community. She knew how much Meredith could contribute if given the opportunity and so the ABLE Network was born (www.theablenetwork.ca).

In addition to founding and sitting on the Board of Directors of ABLE, Barb is also an active member of the Interfaith Refugee Resettlers (IRR) which is made up of people from Trinity Anglican Church, Aurora United Church and the Newmarket Islamic Centre. In her role on this committee, Barb has worked to find a place for their new refugee family to live, furnish it and provide clothing, ESL classes and schooling for the family’s four young children.

With all her responsibilities, Barb also takes the time to volunteer with the Welcome Table. This is a community meal feeding those in need every Wednesday evening. She was the volunteer co-ordinator of this program for 8 years before she started ABLE.

Congratulations to Barb Allen, your work in York Region deserves recognition and we are honoured to be able to help support your cause, THE ABLE NETWORK  and proud to have you as the Winner of our Donna McCann Award.

Garden Therapy Project at the Trauma Center

This year, we have seen the results from our volunteer Garden Therapy Project at the Trauma Center. It was very touching when Barbara from the Trauma Center spoke to us about the impact this project had on the women who participated.

I know it was a touching moment for all of us just knowing we had actually been able to help improve the lives of women who have been living through difficult situations.

Here is a quote from one of the participants and a photo of some of the harvest:
“The Gardening Group has made a gigantic difference in my life. To see people face-to-face who have had similar experiences, has resolved a lot of pain I had.  One of the biggest issues for me was not having my mother’s love and not getting over it and grieving it. Being able to meet people whose mothers were narcissistic, people who are perfectly lovable, has helped me to see, it’s not what was wrong with me but what was wrong with my mother.   It has been a very healing experience and I no longer feel it was my fault.

On April 21,2012 members of SI York Region volunteered time to the Trauma Centre located in Sharon, ON.

With “MEN” power courtesy of Cathryn Geraats, a day was spent preparing the foundation of a Therapy Garden.
