Donna McCann will be remembered by her family, friends and clients as a strong and worldly woman.

The 65-years-old business owner died after a long and courageous battle with diabetes and heart disease.

The former State Farm agent started her own insurance firm in 1983 after spending close to 20 years in the company’s bookkeeping department.

“She was my role model,” said her daughter, Nicole, who followed in her mother’s footsteps and opened her own insurance firm in 2004.

Ms McCann is also survived by daughter Candyce and grandchildren Averie and Livia.

Although not Italian by heritage, she was worldly by nature, Nicole said.

“We’re not Italian, but she wanted her grandkids to call her Nona,” she said. “She liked the name and loved the Italian nature. And she loved to travel.”

Ms McCann built her business to be one of the largest State Farm Insurance firms in York Region and proved to be a true role model for other agents.

“She touched everyone she came in contact with,” Ms Hoy Pressick said. “It was her positive attitude and optimistic view.”

Ms McCann was always quick to point out opportunities and she knew how fortunate she was, Ms Hoy Pressick added.

McCann also gave her time to charitable organizations such at Habitat for Humanity and the Soroptimist Club, plus she supported the Yellow Brick House and several amateur athletes.
